MRI初体験
先週くらいから頭痛が酷くて、この忙しいのに集中力が続かずに非常に難儀していたのだが、どうも風邪でもなさそうだし、肩こりやドライアイが原因というわけでもなさそう。
ちょうど左目側、まぶたの奥あたりが痛いので、ざっと Google 先生に聞いてみたところ、もしかすると 群発性頭痛かも？ とか、眼瞼下垂 で要手術か？ とか、下手したら髄膜炎だの脳腫瘍だのその他脳内出血大サービス系の縁起でもない病名を次々にあげてくださったので、さすがに放置というわけにいかず、会社の近所の病院へ。
お医者様も、Google 先生と同じような病名の可能性を一通りあげてくれたあと、検査しましょうということになり、生まれて初めて MRI というやつに潜ってきました。
MRIって感じ的にはCTと似たようなもんだろう、とか考えつつ、検査室へ向かう。いわゆる非侵襲な検査方法の代表で、磁気を使うのでCTと違って被爆もしないし、痛みもなく輪切りになれるなんて、科学の進歩ってすばらしい。
検査着に着替えて、検査台の上へ横になる。検査中に身体が動かないように、若い女性の技師が二人がかりで、俺の足、胴体、頭とアチコチをバンドでベッドに縛りつける。うーむ、複雑なシチュエーションだ。
検査中に音が出るらしいので、ヘッドホンをつけてもらった。有線放送の適当なチャンネルが流れてる。その後、頭のまわりにジェイソンマスクのようなものを被せられ、頭が動かないようにマスクと顔の間にスポンジを詰め込まれ、いよいよ穴倉に押し込められる。確か、検査前に「閉所恐怖症ではありませんね？」と聞かれたが、確かにこれ、狭いところダメな人だとダメだね。
ヘッドホンから女性技師の声がする。
「それでは検査をはじめます。検査時間は約40分です。目を閉じて眼球が動かないようにしてください」
目を閉じるのか。40分って長いな。退屈だな。まぁ、音楽でも聴いてリラックスして、頭痛が酷くなければ、あわよくば昼寝しちまおう。業務時間中の昼寝。ああ、甘美な囁き。
すると、頭の上から空襲警報のような音がする。うを、頭痛に響くぞ。ずいぶん大袈裟なスタート音だなぁ、とか思っていたら。。。。はじまった。
「ゴンゴンゴンゴンガーガーガーガーガービーーンビーーーンゴンゴンゴンゴン！」
工事現場とヘリコプターと絨毯爆撃が一緒にやってきたような騒音。あまりの煩さに心拍数が上がる。目は開けられないし、寝ている台も振動しながら動いてるし、騒音は頭痛に響くし、もちろん音楽なんて全然聞こえんっちゅーの！
新手の拷問かストレステストか？超伝導のコイルの中で電波を浴び続ける40分。知らなかったよ、超伝導がこんなにうるさいものだって。
終わったころには、すっかり頭痛も激しくなって、疲れ果てました。検査の前には、技師のお姉さんに「磁気で肩こり取れますかね？」とか軽口を叩こうとかネタを考えるくらいの余裕があったのに、全然そんな余裕なっしんぐ。とにかくMRIは、頭痛の時にかかるもんじゃありません。
翌日検査の結果が出たのだが、急性副鼻腔炎とのこと。まぶたの内側、前頭胴の場所に、みごと左側だけ白いものが映ってる。いやー、百聞は一見にしかず、とはこのことだ。まさにここが痛いっちゅーねん。
MRIってのは、超強力な磁気で水素原子の電子をひっぱって角度を同じにして、横から電波を当てることで、水素の場所を分析する機械（超おおざっぱな理解）なので、H2O があると、そこが白くなる。たぶん粘膜か膿が溜まってるのだろう、ということで、抗生物質を投与されることになりました。
ちなみにCTはX線なので、骨なんかはよく見えるが、蛋白質はよく見えない。その点 MRI は骨は見えないが、水分の多い臓器や血管、脳などはよく見える。いやー、よく出来てるもんだ。
とはいえ、せっかく 1.5mm 単位で頭を輪切りにしたので、ついでに脳味噌の中身も見てもらいました。
その結果、俺の頭の中には、酒粕でなく、ちゃんと大脳が入ってることがわかりました。
しかし、輪切り画像を三次元に構成して、脳内の血管をグリグリ回転させたりできるのね。楽しい。
恐れていた腫瘍やら瑠やら出血の形跡は、カケラもなく、一安心。
出来れば次回は頭痛のない時に入りたいもんだ。ていうか出来れば入りたくなる事態そのものがないのが一番だ。健康第一。
